Brief on the origin of the City: Welcome in Dar es Salaam City and feel at home! Dar es Salaam is the name originated from the former Sultan of Zanzibar, whose then was Sultan Seyyid Majid by the expression of the place using Arabic word Bandar-ul-Salaam, meaning the house/ land of piece for his week-end retreats and getting away from stressing works at his Court of Zanzibar. The history of Dar es Salaam City with 5 million inhabitants is dated back in 1862 – 1865 with the coming of the Sultan Seyyid Majid is south-west of Mzizima Village. The village was located in the vicinity of small promontory known as Ras Chokir, today occupied by the Ocean Road Hospital. It was a cluster of small fishing hamlets inhabited since 1500 years ago by Bantu-Speakers evidenced by pottery remains known as Triangular Incised Ware (TIW). The name Mzizima is believed to mean the cooling place from the Swahili verb ku-zizima as settler’s experienced cool sea breeze from the ocean.
